On a previous post I described the predicament I was in when I noticed some obvious and annoying indications of aging in my skin. I am focusing on “skin care for the mature woman” because I am indeed one of those and I know there are many out there who are in the same predicament I was in. I have found the answer and I am really anxious to share with you my discovery.
The annoying signs of aging that I noticed were
- my skin developed a dull lackluster almost gray appearance!
- my makeup didn’t last, within an hour or two it would fade or disappear!
- my lip line became became ill defined!
- and horror of horrors the wrinkles were appearing in logarithms!
My skin care to this point included washing with soap and water, applying an inexpensive over the counter foundation , sometimes adding cheek color and topped it off with lipstick. I learned at the skin care class my friend invited me to, that there are key rules of thumb for healthy skin. There are 5 ingredients or steps needed for a good healthy skin appearance and especially for good skin care for the mature woman.
The 5 steps for good skin care are
- cleansing…this something we all know about . We’ve heard about it since we were kids,”Wash your face and don’t forget to wash behind your ears”. Thus most of us are programmed to do this from our youth.
- exfoliation…this is something I knew very little about…and probably is the single most important step to youthful appearing skin. WE are laying down new skin cells continuously and up until about 30 the old cells slough off freely. After that due to decreased circulation caused by aging they decide to hang around and build up on the surface of your skin. This can cause your skin to become dull in appearance, oily or dry, and to top it of your skin loses flexibility due to the decrease in collagen that starts at 20. Thus the act of exfoliation increases circulation, removes that dull layer of skin ,and allows that beautiful new skin that you are always producing to make it’s debut.
- toner.. your pores in the act of cleansing and exfoliation have opened up so this will tighten giving your skin a smoother glowing look and helps to prevent irritants from entering the pores
- moisturizing…during the process of cleansing and exfoliation the natural skin moisture has been removed, so we need to replace that plus moisturizing gives some protection.
- protection…we need to protect our new baby skin from the sun rays with a good SPF. Sun is one of the key causes of aging skin and discoloration. A good foundation will give us added protection. We also need night protection as that is when our skin is rejuvenating and also it is the time when most of the moisture is lost from the skin.
